Ohio’s Hospice Veteran Volunteer Brings Home Medals from National Games

Dan Shroyer, a dedicated volunteer with American Pride® Veteran Care by Ohio’s Hospice program, proved that age is just a number when he competed in the National Veterans Golden Age Games in Memphis, Tennessee, May 30-June 5.

Volunteer Spotlight Dan Shroyer

Competing in the 85-89 age group, Shroyer earned a Gold Medal in 8-Ball, a Silver Medal in Pickleball Men’s Doubles, and placed 4th in Discus and 5th in Javelin. The games brought together veterans from across the nation for friendly competition and camaraderie.

“He enjoyed the experience and met many wonderful Veterans from all over the United States,” shared those close to Shroyer, who is already planning to compete again next year.

Shroyer’s achievements were celebrated in June when he was recognized at the Dayton Dragons game, highlighting his exceptional service and athletic accomplishments.

As a volunteer with American Pride, Ohio’s Hospice’s specialized program for Veterans, Shroyer ensures fellow Veterans receive care from those who understand their unique experiences. Through this program, Veteran volunteers provide companionship, understanding, and support to fellow Veterans during their end-of-life journey.

His success at the games exemplifies the spirit of service that makes our Veteran volunteers so special—they continue serving their brothers and sisters in arms with the same determination they once brought to defending our nation.

This latest achievement adds to Shroyer’s impressive athletic record. Read more about Dan’s previous gold and bronze medal wins and his inspiring journey as a Veteran volunteer
