Friendtique: Turning Treasures Into Compassionate Care

As a not-for-profit organization, Ohio’s Hospice is deeply grateful for the partners who help bring our mission to life. Hospice is, at its core, about community and neighbors caring for neighbors, families lifting up families.

For more than 20 years, one Wayne County treasure has embodied that spirit in a remarkable way.

Turning Treasures Into Compassionate Care. Learn more about Friendtique in Wooster, OH.

In downtown Wooster, the beloved nonprofit boutiques Friendtique and NEST have become far more than resale shops. At first glance, you might see racks of carefully curated clothing, seasonal décor, furniture, housewares, and perhaps a treasure or two tucked into a corner. But behind the organized activity is something much greater: purpose.

By offering high-quality clothing, household goods, and furniture at affordable prices, Friendtique and NEST do more than resell donated items. They create access. They meet practical needs. They offer dignity and affordability to neighbors who rely on them. And with every purchase, donation, and volunteer hour, they extend compassion beyond their storefront walls.

Over the years, Friendtique has donated more than $1.5 million to support Ohio’s Hospice and its North Care Region, providing comfort, care, and support to local patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses.

“Friendtique has been a wonderful community partner to Ohio’s Hospice,” a spokesperson shared. “We’re so thankful for the continued community support. When you donate, shop, or volunteer at Friendtique, you’re helping to support local patients and families at Ohio’s Hospice.”

A Vision Built on Heart

Friendtique’s story began with grassroots fundraising including motorcycle rallies and community events fueled by volunteers who simply wanted to make a difference. Eventually, that passion turned into a small storefront in Wooster, staffed by about 10 dedicated volunteers.

There were challenges along the way. A move to another building meant hauling merchandise up a steep ramp. Business slowed. At one point, closing seemed possible.

Then came the current location at 223 West Liberty Street and a leaking roof.

“When it rained, we’d put out five-gallon buckets to catch the water,” recalls Senior Director Dawn Schirm. “But our customers knew how dedicated we were. They knew we were going to greet them at the door and make the store look as nice as we could. And they just kept coming to donate and to shop. And we said, ‘OK, we can’t give up.’”

That perseverance paid off. When the opportunity arose to purchase the building, the board recognized that ownership would provide stability for the future. Within four years, the building was completely paid off!  This extraordinary achievement drew attention from hospices across the country eager to learn from their model.

Dawn remains quick to credit the volunteers.

“I attribute our success to our volunteers because they are amazing,” she said. “They’re always here. They’re dedicated and very particular about what goes out. From the beginning, we only accepted the best items and passed along the rest to other organizations. And we built trust with the community.”

Today, the organization owns multiple buildings valued at nearly $2 million — space that allows them to stay organized, stocked, and ready for every season. The Friendtique basement is filled with neatly sized and priced clothing, waiting to enhance a sense of style for the savvy shopper.

Why Hospice?

While Friendtique supports many local causes, Ohio’s Hospice holds a special place in its story.

Years ago, one of the founding volunteers experienced hospice care when her grandmother was served. The compassion and dignity shown during that difficult time left a lasting impression. When the group looked for a nonprofit to support, the answer felt clear.

“It was such a great experience that she really wanted to help hospice,” Dawn shared. “And everyone agreed.”

Dawn herself has witnessed the impact of hospice care in her own family. That personal experience deepens her commitment.

“Looking back, I wish I could have brought her here, so she could have had her hospice experience at Ohio’s Hospice, because ours is the best.”

Every Purchase Makes a Difference

Every item donated.
Every treasure discovered.
Every volunteer hour given.

Each one helps ensure that patients and families in our North Care Region receive expert medical care, emotional support, and spiritual guidance, when they need it most.

That is the power of community.

Friendtique is located at 223 W. Liberty St. in downtown Wooster, and NEST is at 132 N. Walnut St.

When you shop, donate, or volunteer at Friendtique and NEST, you are doing more than supporting a resale shop. You are helping provide comfort, dignity, and peace to families during some of life’s most sacred moments.
