Paws for Comfort: Mindy Allender and Cheeto Bring Joy to Hospice Patients
Mindy Allender had always been passionate about providing pet therapy to those who needed it. However, it wasn’t until she witnessed the joy it brought to her own family that she decided to take action. Allender’s father received hospice care in June 2019, and it was during this time that Allender saw firsthand the impact that pet therapy could have on patients and their families.
Determined to make a difference in the lives of those around her, Allender began researching pet therapy programs and decided to train her one-year-old cat, Cheeto, for the role. With patience and dedication, Allender taught Cheeto to be comfortable in public and to interact with patients in a gentle and calming manner.
Since 2021, Allender and Cheeto have been visiting patients, providing them with the comfort and companionship that only a furry friend can offer. Allender has seen the positive impact that Cheeto has had on patients, particularly those who may not have had the opportunity to interact with cats before. Watching a patient smile as they hold Cheeto and stroke his soft fur is a testament to the benefits of pet therapy.
For Allender, volunteering as a pet therapy team brings her a sense of purpose and fulfillment. She enjoys seeing the smiles on her patients’ faces and the joy that Cheeto brings into their lives. Allender believes that volunteering “brings out the best in people” and has been beneficial to her mental health as well as to the lives of those she visits.
Thank you to Mindy and Cheeto for your dedication to supporting patients and their families!
