Rain Doesn’t Derail Ohio’s Hospice Annual Celebrating Life’s Stories® Butterfly Release in Troy
Inclement weather didn’t stop the nearly 250 community members who registered for the annual Celebrating Life’s Stories® Butterfly Release Sept. 12 at Ohio’s Hospice Troy.

Instead of registrants releasing the butterflies on the hospice property, the guests drove through the Miami County location where staff brought their purchased butterflies directly to their vehicles, along with the event program, Memorial Name inserts, a printed reflection from Chaplain Teresa McClennon, cookies prepared by our Hospitality staff, coffee, and custom butterfly coloring pages for children.
Guests were also given instructions for releasing their butterflies at home.
During breaks in the rain, however, several families gathered by the campus pond and were able to release their butterflies together onsite, creating a special moment despite the weather.
“We are grateful to everyone who attended for their patience, understanding, and flexibility as we adjusted our plans to prioritize safety while still making the day meaningful for all,” said Candis Conley, event coordinator.
A total of $12,244 was raised to help support our mission of providing superior care and superior services to each patient and family.
“The Celebrating Life’s Stories Butterfly Release brings community members together to remember and honor the special people who have touched our lives,” Candis said. “It’s a chance to share memories, spend time together, and reflect on the people and moments that continue to be meaningful to us. Grief looks different for everyone, and this gathering offers a chance to pause, connect, and remember. As the butterflies are released, we’re reminded of the memories, love, and gratitude we continue to carry with us.”
Ohio’s Hospice extends special appreciation to the dedicated volunteers and staff members who made the event possible, including Jill Lewis, Candis Conley, Chris McClellan, Janice Yohey, Becky Schock, Louanne O’Neal, Don Fodor, Sydney Munch, Marsha Simpson, Diane Shipp, Tosha Reed, and Chaplain Teresa McClennon for their meaningful contributions to the ceremony.
The event was made possible through the generous support of sponsors, led by Presenting Sponsor Upper Valley Medical Center. Additional support came from The Messenger Press, Barid Funeral Home, In Memory of Jon and Linda Poelking, and Palmer Bolt & Supply.
