More than a dozen kids recently participated in Camp Pathways Youth Grief Camp, a three-day Ohio’s Hospice event that offered support for kids ages 7-17 who have lost a loved one. 

Held at Wanake Retreat Center in Beach City June 30, July 1, and 2, the camp featured a program designed to help young people develop healthy ways to cope with grief. Arts, crafts and music therapy were among the many activities that took place.  

Some sessions involved a grief workbook and therapy dogs. The campers also swam, and participated in rock climbing, a scavenger hunt and a family ice cream social on the last afternoon. 

“We believe that this camp is an important service for our community and that it really has an impact on the children we serve,” said an Ohio’s Hospice spokesperson. “Grief is not often discussed in our society, so Camp Pathways gives young people a chance to ask questions, share their stories and learn they are not alone in their grief journey.” 

The 15 kids participating were supported by eight staff members and 13 volunteers. 

The camp’s success was also due to the generous support of community sponsors: Culinary Capers, Dover Exchange Club, Geib Funeral Home, Gionino’s Pizzeria, Hugh Fraser Foundation, Kiwanis Dover-New Philadelphia, Miller’s Creamery, Signs To Go, Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, USA Label Express, and Wooster Elks Lodge Charitable Fund. 

Camp was made possible through the dedication of camp committee members Marissa Bryan, Anna Speelman, Bonnie Burnside, Elisa Stoyle, and Debbie Meadows along with staff members Barbara Carter, Amuy Mutti, and Josie McCutcheon.  

Camp was supported by volunteers Kelly Law, Sherry Debevec, Kim Fincher, Connie Stutzman, Linda Husted, Frank Cebul, Julie Lee, Nevin Nussbaum, Raygen Speelman, Edward Babulski, Sharon Pooler, Chris Clark, and Jim Lytle who gave their time and hearts to support grieving youth. 

Ohio’s Hospice plans to continue offering Camp Pathways in summer 2027, with dates to be announced. The camp is part of the organization’s commitment to providing comprehensive grief support services to all members of the community through Pathways of Hope, regardless of whether they have used Ohio’s Hospice services.
