Sharon Pooler: A Devoted Volunteer and Animal-Assisted Therapy Advocate
Sharon Pooler has been a vital part of the Ohio’s Hospice team in the Wooster region since 2007, fully embracing and embodying our mission through her unwavering dedication as a volunteer. Her commitment spans a variety of roles, from serving as a Board member to offering her professional skills as an interior designer. Pooler has helped transform patient and family spaces using repurposed items from Friendtique and The Nest, resale shops that support Ohio’s Hospice.

However, it was through our Animal-Assisted Therapy program that Pooler first became involved. A lifelong dog lover, she was inspired to join after witnessing the comfort pet visits brought her own mother during a hospital stay. Since then, Pooler has introduced 15 therapy dogs to the program, each sharing her calm and gentle spirit.
Her presence—and that of her dogs—has made a deep impact. Pooler recalls many touching moments where patients, previously unresponsive to family members, reacted with recognition and joy during visits with her dogs. “I get smiles from people during a time of sorrow and pain,” she shares. These moments reaffirm the healing power of connection and companionship.
Pooler’s compassion also extends to our annual Children’s Bereavement Camp, where she volunteers with her therapy dogs. The first day is often filled with silence and hesitation from the children, but Pooler notes that a simple walk with a dog can open the door to conversation and healing.
At Ohio’s Hospice, volunteers like Pooler are the heart of our mission. Her motivation is simple yet profound: “I like to do what I can to help people,” she says. And that, we believe, captures the heart of every Ohio’s Hospice volunteer.
