Book Review: What Cloud Is My Mommy In?
Children’s books about grief and loss and death and dying have varied perspectives and objectives. Some are meant to inform and educate while others are intended to comfort and soothe. There are stories for every type of loss. This story by author Kim Vesey is unique in that it is speaking directly to a young child’s spirit of imagination and therefore, is meant to encourage a young child’s spiritual quest to remain close to their mother.

This approach is one rooted in faith and the belief in heaven though not specific to any one religion. This book will find its audience in the faithful who seek opportunities for their very young grievers to believe in something bigger than themselves. The author is tapping into the imagination that young children possess and is harnessing it as a resource for coping and especially remembering and connecting with a cherished mother who is dearly missed and still very much needed.
This book is the author’s first of a series and includes tips for supporting a child whose mother has died. Vesey is a seasoned hospice nurse whose inspiration for this book came from her own experience with the loss of her daughter and a desire to comfort her surviving three-year-old grandson. Recommended for ages 3-5.
